We face near constant transitions
We experience an average of 1 life disruption every 18 months and 1 in 10 of these will be "life quakes"
Bruce Feiler writes in his book Life is in the Transitions: Mastering Change at Any Age, there are 52 common types of life disruption that are experienced by people in modern life. These disruptors fall into 5 categories: love, identity, beliefs, work, and body. Here is the full list of potential disruptors.
Disruptors can be positive or negative, self-initiated or involuntary. The average person experiences one disruptive event every 18 months, although they often cluster together, and every 10th event will be a life quake, which shakes us to our core and makes us reassess everything.
Sometimes one disruption can be the catalyst for initiating several more. For me, the disruptors of adult education, personal calling, changing careers, starting a company, and changing personal health habits are all connected to the same vision of becoming a coach. It’s a lot to learn and process.
But this vision has given me purpose and meaning amid a global pandemic and uncertainty about possible future international moves. Positive, self-initiated disruptors can be a way to balance the negative involuntary ones. This is at the heart of transitions coaching—creating positive change, both for its own sake and as a way to manage or soften the impact of disruptive transitions.
